Mundanities
St.John's is experiencing another snowy and windy day. Which means it will be impossible for my broken down truck to navigate the streets here. I bought the truck and traveled cross-country last summer and early autumn, camping and fishing and canoing across Eastern Canada. Somewhere along the way my 4x4 transmission gave out, leaving the engine driving only the back tires. I haven't bought snow tires this year, because I am saving for my trip to Africa. So essentially, my truck is useless. I will, insha Allah, try to get it back on the road by letting some air out the rear tires, and loading up the back with some bricks, putting some weight on the end so the squishy tires will stick better to the ice on the road.
Sure, I will see more wear on my tires and an increase in fuel consumption, but at least I am more mobile; and besides, I don't drive all that often.
When I return, insha Allah, I will get my 4x4 transmission fixed and then put on a pair of fierce off-road tires; and then laughing wildly, drive all over Allah's creation.
News Commentary
I was reading a news article and I got upset. I realised quickly what a farce this situation is. I hope others realise it too, but fear most won't.
The current state of African politic is a direct result of colonisation. Today it can be called more corporatisation. Corporate interests control most of Africa, and they take advantage of the violent instability and poverty to drive down prices. They benefit greatly off of what can only be described as slavery; warlords and gangsters in indirect corporate employ, murder and kidnap the populace, forcing them to work or fight for them.
So then finally, the white "moral" minority, captures this criminal, proudly proclaiming the west and it's desire for peace and justice. And for proof they parade the perfect face for the villainy of Africa. Black, poor, violent.
You see the west wants to see a black face put to the violence and atrocity that is beginning to permeate western news. News this large can't be kept from the public forever, and now that its leaking in, white corporate interests must be kept untainted, pure to the public eye. When these corporations are questioned about the activities of child militias and slavery, they will often claim that its one of the ugly truths to doing business in Africa, and that while they often have to assuage and deal with the leaders of these violent gangs, their only goal is to benefit the nation. But its all lies and media spin.
Surely, while the perpetrators of this violence sit ensconced in the legal protection of their corporation, claiming the Nuremburg Defense and weaseling out of personal liability may not see justice in this world. Certainly they will see justice in the next.
It would just be nice to see them get theirs while I am still on this earth.
